Sister Dale Brown
WASFAA’s Sister Dale Brown Summer Institute (SDBSI) is traditionally held each June. In a typical year, hundreds of financial aid professionals from across the region gather for a week of learning, community-building, and immersive experiences on a college campus, often exploring the surrounding area together. For attendees, SDBSI is not only a memorable training opportunity—it’s also a chance to forge lasting connections with colleagues in higher education.
Sister Dale lived a life rooted in faith, service, and deep commitment to education. A beloved member of the Community of the Holy Spirit, she was widely respected and admired for her sharp intellect, quick wit, and unwavering dedication to helping others. Born on April 15, 1941, in Livermore, California, Sister Dale attended elementary and high school in the Bay Area before entering the Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose in 1961.
She earned a BS in Mathematics from the College of the Holy Names in Oakland and later completed an MS in General Science, with an emphasis in Oceanography, at Oregon State University. From 1963 to 1972, she taught math and science in the Los Angeles area. In 1972, she joined the Community of the Holy Spirit and relocated to San Diego, where she joined the faculty at University of San Diego High School as a counselor. She also earned an MS in Counseling from San Diego State University and taught science, including her favorite subject—oceanography.
In 1979, Sister Dale became Coordinator of the Student Employment Center at the University of San Diego (USD). Her career at USD continued to flourish as she served in multiple roles, including Financial Aid Counselor for Loans, Assistant Director for Financial Aid Systems, and ultimately, Associate Director of the Office of Financial Aid Services. Over more than 25 years, she supported students, families, and colleagues with unwavering care and commitment.
Sister Dale also made an indelible mark on the financial aid profession. She served in leadership roles within several professional associations and became known across California, the Western region, and the nation for her passion in training and mentoring new financial aid advisors and technicians.
